A COMPANION TO DON'T PLAY THE RECORDING

THE HOLLOW

Some things should be left untouched · f(x) presents

THE PREMISE

You are Sam Reyes, driving eleven miles past the last named thing on the map because your brother Eli — a seasonal fire-ranger at Blackpine Hollow — left you a voicemail that was mostly static. One sentence survived it: “Don't play the recording.”

Your car dies at the clearing. The bridge back is out. The cabin is lit, the door is unlocked, and Eli is nowhere. There is a field radio under the back window, and its prompt reads PLAY.

The game waits. There is nothing else left to do.

THE RULE OF THE HOLLOW

The ground here doesn't keep the dead — it lends them. Whatever is buried in the Hollow walks again when the words are spoken. The words only work in one direction.

The words — eleven syllables, older than the graves they open — were transcribed by the old ranger Marta Voss, and recorded onto a field radio by Eli, who did not believe her warnings. What happens after that is the game.

WHO YOU WILL MEET

Sam Reyes

THE ONE WHO CAME LOOKING

Eli's sibling. Not a believer, not a fighter. Learns to be both by the one lamp that never goes out: too late.

Eli Reyes

THE ONE WHO PRESSED RECORD

Seasonal fire-ranger. Kept a journal, kept a toolbox in the woodshed, kept exactly one warning on his voicemail. Nowhere to be found.

Marta Voss

THE ONE WHO WROTE THEM DOWN

The old ranger at the graves. White-eyed, arms down, waiting. She knows the words in both directions, and she only ever reads one.

Quinn

THE HUNTER

A through-hiker who camped by the north stones three nights ago. Cold three days, pack still full. Walks again. Does not stop.

The Watcher

WHAT ANSWERS

Not a body. It speaks the cadence backwards, and the rain leans away from it. Hold the circle when it comes.

The Older Dead

THE HOLLOW'S LENDINGS

A farmer with a rotted straw hat. A villager in a grave-dirt apron. The Hollow has been lending for longer than anyone has been writing it down.

The Mimics

VOICES IN THE TREES

Things in the woods that borrow familiar voices, almost right. “Sam, it's Eli. I fixed the car. Come feel — the engine's warm.” None of them are Eli.

The Scarecrow

WEST TREE LINE

It was not there yesterday.
