Bestiary

What walks in Blackpine Hollow, how it behaves, and what your axe can and cannot buy you. This page is about mechanics — for who these things were, see the character pages.

The Hunter

ACTIVE FROM THE MOMENT THE RECORDING PLAYS

One body, always somewhere, always walking toward you. The hunter stalks the whole map for the rest of the night — through rain, around walls, through the door you forgot to close. It cannot run. Neither can it be argued with.

Inside arm's reach it bites. An axe swing puts it down for a long count — long enough to do whatever you were doing, not long enough to forget about it. During the finale it gets back up much faster.

The Pack

ANSWER THE READING · FINALE ONLY

When Marta begins the reading, the older dead rise and converge on her circle in patient straight lines. They ignore you unless you are in the way — their target is her voice. Any deadite within reach of the circle makes Marta falter: hold the pressure off for three seconds too long and she loses the line — the stanza starts again.

Put them down with the axe and watch the reading bar climb. That bar is the whole fight: it only moves while she is unhassled, and it moves backwards when she is not.

The Watcher

STANZAS THREE AND SIX

Twice during the reading, something that is not a body comes for Marta directly. The objective flips to IT'S COMING — STAND WITH HER, and the only defense is proximity: be inside the circle when it arrives and it breaks around you both. Be anywhere else and it walks through her line — full stanza reset, no damage, all shame.

You will hear it before anything else: the cadence, backwards, under the floor of the music. On the bridge road earlier in the night, when the objective says RUN — that is also it, and running is correct.

The Mimic Voices

HARASSMENT ONLY · NEVER A BODY

Scares, not threats. The mimic voices call from the tree line in borrowed voices, labeled in the subtitles so you always know. They never attack; their job is to make you walk somewhere stupid. The correct response to every single one of them is to keep doing what you were doing.

Staying Alive

THE NUMBERS THAT MATTER
THINGWHAT IT DOES
HealthThree segments, bottom-left. A bite costs one. Stay unbitten eight seconds and one grows back.
Three bitesBlackout. You wake at the clearing with full health and everything you were carrying. The night does not reset.
The axeIn the woodshed, by the log pile. Swing with click (or the trigger). One hit downs any deadite.
Downed deaditesDown is not out. Long count normally; short count during the reading.
The reading barTop-center during the finale. Climbs while Marta is unhassled; resets the stanza when she falters or the Watcher gets through.
The circleStand in it when the Watcher rushes. Otherwise, patrol the approaches — the pack comes from the tree line in straight lines.
