World & Lore

Blackpine Hollow, the rule that runs it, and the objects the night turns on. Spoiler-light: this page explains the world, not the plot.

Blackpine Hollow

ELEVEN MILES FROM ANYTHING WITH A NAME

A clearing at the end of a fire road: one cabin, one woodshed, a stone well, a fire-lookout tower, a log bridge over the ravine, and a small fenced plot of graves behind the house. The bridge is out. It was out before you arrived, which is worth thinking about exactly once and then not again.

Eli Reyes was posted here for the fire season. The graves were here long before the cabin. Nothing about the plot is on any map Sam could buy.

The Rule

LENT, NOT KEPT
The ground here doesn't keep the dead — it lends them. Whatever is buried in the Hollow walks again when the words are spoken. The words only work in one direction.

Three consequences, all load-bearing:

The Eleven Syllables

NEVER RENDERED AS WORDS

The game never spells the incantation. When it is spoken — by the tape, by Marta, by the woods — the subtitles show only glyphs:

⟨ ᚠ — ᚱ ᚦ —— ⟩

What you hear is sound shaped like language; what it means stays unknowable on purpose. Marta transcribed the syllables long ago and says them “over and over, like stitching something shut.” Eli's journal renders them only as marks. The wiki follows the same rule the game does: no translation exists to give you.

The Stones & the Circle

THREE FRAGMENTS, THREE SITES

Three fragments of a broken marker stone lie where the Hollow's edges fray: under the collapsed bridge, at the base of the fire lookout, and tied to a rope down the stone well — a rope that tugs back. Returned to the grave plot, the fragments seat into the three markers and glow the cold teal the Hollow uses for everything it is paying attention to.

Together they close a circle, and a circle is a place a voice can stand and be louder than the ground.

The Graves

THE PLOT BEHIND THE CABIN

Wooden crosses, older than the county. A shed with a crescent-moon door leans beside them. One grave stands open all night, and the game never says who dug it. The dead here go back further than any record: hikers, rangers, and under them the farmers and villagers of a settlement no map remembers — the ones the reading wakes last, because they are deepest.

The Tape

CHAIN OF CUSTODY

Marta spoke the syllables at the tree line for thirty years, one direction only, stitching. Eli recorded her to prove there was nothing to prove. The field radio played her voice backward into the ground — a machine cannot read true, it can only reverse. The ground answered.

“He played my words backward into the ground, child. The ground answered.” — Marta Voss

This is also why the Watcher sounds the way it does. What answers speaks the cadence backwards — the recording is the only introduction they ever had.
