About BMI
Formula
Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by the square of height in metres:
BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)2
What BMI tells you
BMI is a simple screening tool that gives a rough indication of whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height. It is widely used by healthcare professionals as a quick first assessment.
Limitations
BMI has several well-known limitations. It should not be used as the sole diagnostic measure:
- Does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass (muscular individuals may show as overweight)
- Does not account for fat distribution (visceral vs. subcutaneous fat)
- Less accurate for elderly people who tend to lose muscle mass
- May not apply equally across different ethnicities and body types
- Not suitable for children, pregnant women, or highly trained athletes without adjusted thresholds
For a more complete picture of health, consider consulting a healthcare professional who can assess body composition, waist circumference, blood pressure, and other indicators alongside BMI.
